A competitive dinghy sailor, he won his first National Championship aged 16. At Southampton University he captained the 1st team which dominated University Team Racing. In 1984 he sailed in the Olympic squad, and since then he has represented Great Britain at international regattas with successes at National and European level.
At Accenture (nee Andersen Consulting) for 12 years he specialised in project management of major business critical IT projects, and was seconded for over 2 years as one of the IT Directors for the DSS with a department of over 500 and a budget responsibility of £40m.
